A Confession

Submitted by Jim Wogan on March 10, 2010 - 9:32pm

I have a confession to make.

When it comes to Tennessee sports, I like March better than August.

I previous years, that would be enough to get a reporter run out of town. But not anymore.

August is the lead-up to football season, and there's not much that tops Tennessee football-- during the season. But the fact is, the preseason is a long and often predictable month that at times seems endless from start to finish and is usually drenched in sweat.

March is different.

While the Lady Vols are guaranteed home games in the first rounds of the NCAA Tournament, there is no guarantee where the Vols will go. Could be Spokane. Could be New Orleans. Could be.. Buffalo?

Neither team knows their opponent. Imagine the Vols football team not knowing who it's going to play until three days before the season opener.

My infatuation with March is releatively new. For a while, I thought I might never cover a men's NCAA Tournament here. It took nine seasons (1990-1998), before I did. Let me remind you, there are 64 teams invited. That's how bad Tennessee basketball was.

While the Lady Vols are always busy this time of year, the UT men have a much shorter history with it. The Vols will tie a program record with their 5th straight NCAA appearance this year.

Gotta love it. And I do.
