Where does Donovan's goal rate?

Submitted by Jim Wogan on June 23, 2010 - 1:02pm

I want to thank Landon Donovan for knocking me off my treadmill. Well, almost.

Donovan scored the game winning goal in the 90+1' minute of the USA's World Cup game against Algeria. I was in the 45' of my workout and fortunately in a warm-down (slow) mode when it happened. When ball struck net, I yelled. Fortunately, I didn't break stride.

Donovan's goal will get plenty of hype. It should. It propelled the United States into the Round of 16 in the World Cup, something that rarely happens.

There will be plenty of talk about where Donovan's goal rates in the spectrum of outstanding sports moments. It was special-- and while it didn't actually win a championship-- it may go down as one of this generation's most memorable.

Here are mine. Not all are good, they are in no particular order and they are purely personal. I don't expect yours to be the same:

1) Fisk home run, 1975 World Series.  2) Miracle on Ice celebration.  3)Titans Music City Miracle play.  4) Vols beat Notre Dame on blocked FG, 1991.  5) Clint Stoerner drops ball at Neyland Stadium, 1998.  6) Buckner misplays ball, 1986 World Series.  7) Michael Phelps wins 100 m butterfly by .01 seconds, 2008 Olympics.  8) Ali vs. Frazier I, 1971.  9) Ali vs. Foreman, 8th Round, 1974. 10) Final out 2004 World Series.  11) David Ortiz 12th inning HR in ALCS, 2004.
